Prof. Marcel Miglierini
Marcel Miglierini graduated from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava in 1981, where he has been working at the Institute of Nuclear and Physical Engineering since then. In 1995, he received his DrSc. and in 1997 he was appointed full professor of condensed matter physics at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. At the beginning of his scientific career, he completed several long-term research stays in Japan, France, Austria and Germany. His main areas of scientific interest include magnetic and structural properties of disordered materials (amorphous metallic glasses, quasicrystals, nanocrystals, powder steels) and their hyperfine interactions, structural positions of iron in archaeological, biological, chemical, geological, mineralogical and metallurgical systems. They were investigated mainly by nuclear spectroscopy methods (Mössbauer spectroscopy, NMR, electron-positron annihilation, gamma spectroscopy), atomic and magnetic microscopy and special analytical techniques based on synchrotron radiation. For his achievements, the Mössbauer Effect Data Center in Asheville, USA, declared him one of the four most productive authors in the field of Mössbauer spectrometry in the world in the years 1990–2000. He received awards from several institutions, including the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, the Slovak Physical Society, the Association of Slovak Scientific and Technical Societies and the Ioannes Marcus Marci Spectroscopic Society.
In 2011, prof. Miglierini initiated the Winter School of Synchrotron Radiation with international participation, where renowned experts in the field share their knowledge and skills with the participants of the school. Currently, this activity continues as the XFEL, Synchrotron and Neutron Radiation Users School. Since 1994, prof. Miglierini has organized a series of international conferences entitled Mössbauer Spectrometry in Materials Sciences, which have been held regularly every two years until now. The conferences take place alternately in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In 2002, this event was held as the Czech-Slovak NATO Workshops for Advanced Research under the joint leadership of prof. Miroslav Mašláň from Olomouc and prof. Marcel Miglierini.
Professor Miglierini has been actively involved in several international and domestic organizations. From 1998 to 2020, he represented Slovakia in the International Board for the Application of the Mössbauer Effect as an elected member. In the CENTRALSYNC consortium, which provides access to the synchrotron source in Grenoble for researchers from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, he represented Slovakia from 2008 to 2018 and served as chairman of its steering committee several times. From 2003 to 2025, he was the president of the Slovak Spectroscopic Society.
